Shared Energy for a Sustainable City

Block Zero worked with E.ON to create a narrative for ectogrid™, a truly revolutionary energy solution, and then bring this story to life through showroom experience design and an interactive communication platform known as ectotable™. In 2023, ectotable™ was showcased at the UN Climate Conference COP28, earning E.ON and ectogrid™ an award in the energy efficiency category.

What is ectogrid™?

ectogrid™ is a decentralized energy solution that transforms the traditionally isolated cooling and heating systems into a fully integrated and synchronized network, contributing to more efficient energy consumption and lowering environmental impact.

Narrative Process™?

At first, we created a singular core narrative for ectogrid™, addressing urban challenges, E.ON's vision for sustainable cities, and the role of ectogrid™ in that vision. The outcome, the Narrative Wheel, served as a guideline and an internal tool to design a consistent experience of the showroom.

The focus of our experience design was a permanent showroom at Medicon Village, the site of one of the world's first ectogrid™ installations.

Showroom design

The Narrative Process™ informed the experience design of the showroom at Medicon Village in Lund, Sweden. To introduce the innovation in a befitting manner, we utilized concepts ranging from physical to digital, used a variety of tools and emerging technologies such as mixed realities, projection mapping, immersive light and sound design.

Presentation engine™

Utilizing our in-house communication and exploration tool, Presentation Engine™, we crafted a tangible concept to narrate the story of ectogrid™. This concept materialized into what we named the ectotable™ — an interactive table with a large touch screen that served as a playground for anyone curious to see how the innovation would work.

In 2023, ectotable™ was showcased at the UN Climate Conference COP28, earning E.ON and ectogrid™ an award in the energy efficiency category.

Outcomes

ectotable™, is used by E.ON to talk about ectogrid™ at different levels, to a varied audience, and in a multitude of contexts — it is permanently displayed at Medicon Village in Lund, at E.ON headquarters in Germany, and at Microsoft in Seattle.
